Storyline/Overview

Things are always strange at the Crotony household, but when Dad sold out the family to an insane rabbit things only got worse. Even Granny started to notice that life was a little weirder than normal. For one thing, the house was no longer connected to the ground; it was just floating around in space. Then she realized the family seemed to be missing, although that did not really bother her since the house was finally quiet. But when she discovered that her prized cookbook had disappeared, she decided she'd had enough!

Now she's out to nail the Mad Rabbit's hide to the barn door. In her trusty flying washing machine, she'll have to fight her way across five mixed-up worlds before she can kick some furry-tailed butt. But since these worlds were created from the Mad Rabbit's bizarre imagination, she'll have to use trial and error (mostly error) to discover the solutions to the challenges that face her.

Gameplay and Controls

When Armed & Delirious starts, Granny must search her ransacked home, collect the few useful items remaining, and find a means of transportation through the void of space. The interface is basically the standard "click on objects" type found in most adventure games, but it does have a few new features. One nice addition is the drag mode -- you drag a line from objects using the mouse to show where you want them to go.

As in most other adventure games, you end up hauling around tons of stuff, but Armed & Delirious has taken the inventory to a whole new level in absurdity. Granny carries everything she acquires in her drooping bra, and the items she ends up with are just as bizarre as where she sticks them. How she found room for the credenza I'll never figure out.

Unfortunately, the easy-to-understand interface does not make up for the completely illogical solutions to puzzles. For many areas of the game, the only way to figure out how to solve a puzzle is by "brute forcing" it -- clicking and dragging everything randomly until something happens. The offbeat "logic" does add some charm to the game, but I prefer figuring out the solutions to puzzles logically to the absolute chaos found here. Armed & Delirious does have its humorous moments, though—such as finding that a singing cow has taken over your bathroom.

The other major lack in Armed & Delirious is a storyline. The whole plot behind the game is that Granny wants her cookbook back, and if it is not too inconvenient she'll try to find her family too. There are lots of places where the game designers could have added some real depth to the story, but they seemed to concentrate on making the game as illogical as possible.

Armed & Delirious also suffers from technical flaws. In many areas I found it impossible to save the game, meaning I often had to go through some complex actions over and over again when I got stuck. The game would also occasionally crash, causing me to lose more time (and hair) replaying.

Graphics

Visually, Armed & Delirious is amazing! The game is filled with richly detailed backgrounds that have been warped in some very disturbing ways. And the animation of the various characters is nearly as good as that used in recent animated films like Anastasia. Everything is rendered in eye-popping 3D -- the bright characters and scenery help give the game the feel of a real (although twisted) world. The strong graphics and sound in the game are really the only thing that made this one worth playing for me.

Audio

This is one game where everything in the world talks to you -- sometimes even the plants and furnishings. The voice acting is often nasal and irritating, but I must admit that the various voices are suited to the characters in the game. Parents should be warned about the language in the game, though -- Granny has quite a foul mouth, especially when she hits the booze.

The sound effects in the game are masterfully done. Everything you do results in some really crazy noises -- the sounds blend very well with the off-the-wall animations throughout the game. The music throughout the game blends with the effects to provide a distinct theme for each area.

Bottom Line

Armed & Delirious is a truly bizarre game. Players with a twisted sense of humor might find Granny's repeated antics and the erratic guesswork and chaotic problem-solving fun, but for most adventure game fans this one is probably worth skipping. The game is also not for younger kids, due to strong language and adult themes throughout.
