Redneck Rampage Rides Again

Overview

The original Redneck Rampage was advertised as "All The Killin’, Twice The Humor, Half The Intelligence," and this game is certainly a continuation on the same theme. Welcome to Hickston, Arkansas, home of Bubba and Leonard, a few backwoods residents, and hordes of alien-created clones. As Leonard, it is up to you to walk, run, boat, blast, and swear your way through hours of aliens and alien clones. You will spend your time wandering through backwoods Arkansas, blasting everything in sight and looking for your friend Bubba.

Gameplay, Controls, Interface

Redneck Rampage Rides Again features an easy-to-use familiar interface that is very much in the Doom genre. You can move around the game world using the mouse or the keyboard. The game is definitely easier to control with the keyboard, but the mouse offers an extra level of twitch that makes the game a little more realistic when the action gets fast and furious. This is especially true when you are in the swamp boat or riding the motorcycle.

Graphics

The graphics in this game are a little snappier than in the original Redneck Rampage, but that is the only improvement. For the most part the graphics are unchanged; even the Doom-like interface hasn’t changed. The graphics before were good, but it seems like Interplay has not kept up with the times on this one.

Audio

Although the quality of the sound leaves a little to be desired, the sound effects for this game are half the fun. Burp at the wrong time and you’ll alert the enemy; give a good country yell and you’ll recover a little health. There are also many colorful phrases to describe what people are going to do to you and what you are going to do to them. Most of these are not appropriate for young children, but the guys at Interplay have kept it relatively clean.

System Requirements

This game requires a Pentium 90 with at least 16 MB of RAM and at least 220 MB free on the hard drive. You will also need a CD-ROM drive, DOS 5.0 or later, and a SoundBlaster or 100% compatible sound card.

Documentation

The documentation for this game is extremely limited. All that comes with the game is The Hickston Hog, the adult redneck daily for Hickston, Arkansas. This newspaper/manual sets up the background for the game with articles such as "Arkansas Town Toughs Declare War on Aliens!" and a headline that reads "Fathers Day Approaches: Most Confusing Day of Year." It contains all the crude humor and off-the-wall jokes that characterize the Redneck Rampage series.

Bottom Line

This game is very fun for a while, but rapidly grows repetitious. If you couldn’t get enough of Redneck Rampage, then Redneck Rampage Rides Again is probably for you. However, if you burned out on the last Redneck game, this one probably won’t offer you enough new features to keep you burning the midnight oil for more than a couple of nights.
