If you haven't noticed, we live in an aggressive and violent world. Nevermind the actual world we inhabit, the world filled with war and all that, but let's just look at what we do for leisure: mercilessly kill each other online. Whether we're destroying rival bases from an isometric perspective, sniping enemies out in a WWII setting, or tackling a wide receiver in Madden, we're all out for blood in some way or another.

But with so many avenues for potential bloodshed out there, it can be hard to choose -- fear not, though, because with Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict out on the market, that tough decision just became much, much easier.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict is a big departure from what the series has been usually known for. The core of the game is still focused on tournament-style fragging action, but you're not just limited to big guns anymore ' now, you have big blades too. The impact on the series is bigger than you'd think. While all the old favorites like the rocket launcher and flak cannon can still be found in Unreal Championship 2 (and still play in a very similar fashion), the main draw to UC2 is the third-person melee combat, complete with special moves, finishing moves, and the like. It's a dynamic and interesting addition to the series, and more importantly, it translates well onto the Xbox. Unlike the earlier port of Unreal Championship, Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict feels tailor-made for the Xbox, taking away some of the more cumbersome aspects of online PC shooters like a huge inventory of weapons, while instilling console-friendly sensibilities that makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable. And all the while, Unreal Championship 2 is still the fast, fun online shooter we've all come to know and love, with even that boisterous announcer that calls out headshots.

Like with any other online shooter, the learning curve can be extravagant at times, especially since UC2 has a lot of complicated moves and abilities you'll have to get down to compete competitively online. Fortunately, the one-player experience is meaty and should help you wet your feet (and then some) into fast-paced frag-errific world of Unreal.

And, as clichéd as it is, there's no way better to say it: Unreal Championship 2 looks hot. With lush environments, detailed models, and snazzy special effects, it's easy to overlook the few technical failings of UC2, like the occasionally wonky third-person camera and some noticeable screen tearing.

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict is, without a doubt, one of the best experiences you can have on Xbox Live. It blends meticulous fragging action with invigoratingly new brawling elements that, in the end, makes for a completely enthralling experience. If you're an Xbox Live fiend, don't hesitate to check it out.

Game Reviews

"We're bringing a sword to a gunfight," says Unreal Championship 2 Lead Designer Cliff Bleszinski. "Whether you prefer dual, pistols or a pointy object, it's about freedom of choice, and UC II gives players plenty of options." The ability to pop from first- to third-person perspective at the push of a button spices up marksmanship with mobility and melee moves. Out of ammo and wondering what to do about the guy launching rockets at you? Don't write your last will just yet; now you can close the gap with a cartwheel and lop off his head. Each character has his or her own arsenal of hand-to-hand combos, complete with trademark adrenaline attacks, new defensive options (you can block or bat bullets back at foes), and gore-splattering, Mortal Kowbaf-worthy finishing moves. Fragging season opens this fall on Xbox with splitscreen, LAN, and Xbox Live online play.
